Our good friends at Angama Mara have just unveiled their latest gem, Angama Amboseli, nestled in the heart of Kimana Sanctuary, Kenya’s first community-owned conservancy. This exciting addition to the safari scene offers an intimate experience with stunning views and the majestic presence of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.
When it comes to the Kenyan safari scene, besides the luxurious private residences like Arijiju and Ol Jogi, the camps worth considering are the likes of Great Plains and Angama. While Angama Mara might not be my personal favourite lodge, there’s something uniquely refreshing about how the owners embrace my candid opinions. In a world where some lodges shy away from honest reviews, Angama is always up for a bit of critique — and for that, they earn my eternal thanks.
Angama Amboseli, with its distinctive design and intimate feel, offers just ten suites, including two sets of interconnected suites perfect for families. The lodge’s exterior features an innovative mix of elephant dung and concrete, creating a unique texture — yes, you’ll literally be staying in a “dung hole,” but it’s a beautifully designed one. The suites boast floor-to-ceiling windows that offer unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro, allowing guests to take in the grandeur of the mountain from every corner of their suite, from the bed to the shower — the perfect spot for a selfie to compare just how pale you are next to the snow-capped peak.
In terms of wildlife, Angama Amboseli offers a different experience than the Mara. You won’t be overwhelmed by lions hunting every few minutes, but the elephant herds roaming with their grand tusks sweeping the earth provide an unforgettable sight. Guests at Angama Amboseli enjoy the privilege of exclusive access to the sanctuary, meaning fewer crowds and the chance to embark on night drives or relaxed early morning safaris — if you’re brave enough to get up at 5:30 a.m.
For bird lovers, Amboseli National Park, only a short 45-minute drive away, is home to over 400 bird species and diverse wildlife. At the lodge, there’s also a Safari Shop, Games Room, Art Gallery, Weaving Studio, and a Photographic Studio to keep you entertained when you’re not out on safari. For those looking to relax, a purpose-built viewing tower offers sweeping views of the local elephants and other wildlife that frequent the surrounding marsh. It’s an ideal spot for a peaceful afternoon, whether you’re enjoying a picnic or indulging in the lodge’s complimentary drinks while watching elephants drink from their unique trough.
Getting there is easy — you can either take a Safarilink flight or take the scenic (and slightly grueling) 3.5-hour drive from Nairobi. Angama suggests a five-day stay, but why stop there? Be bold — why not extend it to nine years, complete with free Wi-Fi and breakfast?
I’m planning a visit to Angama Amboseli toward the end of next year, maybe just for a few days, unless, of course, the elephants start turning cannibal and hunting down guests. After all, I do like a bit of drama with my safari adventures.
